ODST is a good game, but it's not typical HALO. To be honest, I had the Halo games for a while and didn't finish them until I beat ODST.
As far as campaign mode, you need to be aware of the time indicator before the start of each level. When you start, it's 6 hours since you "dropped" and while you're going through the city at night, you pick up parts that flash back to events that happened earlier in the day. That's what makes it confusing. For the most part, when you play the rookie, you're in the "present", when you play other characters, you're playing flashbacks.
