Is full-body motion control the next trend in gaming?

Whatever happened to just moving your thumbs and eyeballs? Here are the highlights from the article:

* Full body and hand gesture control of games & characters.

* In fighting games you kick, punch, duck, dive, jump and so forth with your body.

*It also picks up small hand gestures like pinching, grabbing and scrolling.

* There will also be video conferencing and games with video.

* Trivia game over the internet with live images of each person playing. When a question pops up, they can clap to buzz in.

* You can "move objects on your screen" and the other party can see what you're doing in real time.

* Sensor detects only the person playing, not folks observing on the couch.

Probably not. For the most part, gaming has always been somewhat of a relaxing hobby for most people. If they really want full motion fighting gaming, it would be a lot easier to just enroll in a martial arts dojo.

I'm not saying that there won't be full motion control games as there is a very strong niche of people that prefer games like Para Para Paradise and Dance Dance Revolution.

I just don't see it as a "trend" as much as it is a "niche".

  1. That is a possibility. When Virtual Fighter first came out, it was in talks about how the V.R. world might come in effect for fighting games. Now that Microsoft is talking extremes, we actually might see a reality with what was once a dream. Let's hope that technology will over come the essence of gaming.

  2. I dont know...Indeed its a GREAT advance in terms of techology...But what i think what truly is going to be a true control is a kind of Real Life Simulation where we simply would put some kind of sensors or some kind of glasses or helmet and then puff...there we were in Liberty City, dressed as nicko ready to explore the city. I really think that this is the kind of technology that truly is going to put games even more higher in terms of interaction. But the so called full-body motion that outragiac refer to is also a good advance in what concerns to get more close to that "real life simulation".

  3. If it is a trend, it will be a short trend as most gamers do not want to use their entire body to play a game. Also, the responsiveness would have to be perfect.

  4. It sounds as if it would be quite entertaining, and a giant leap for technology. Still, I'm not quite sure that it would stand with the amount of lazy gamers out there. Isn't that part of the allure of gaming, to sit back, relax, beat a few bosses, and wallow in leisure?

  5. Until we have Holodecks like Star Trek I would have to say No, Most Gamers a lazy. Everyone I know with a Wii plays sitting down now, the novelty of the Wii's motion controller wore off quick. And I don't see this working with a lot of games. Take SF4 for example, Punching and kicking is easy but how would someone do more complex moves like Guile's Blade Kick or Ken and Ryu's Roundhouse. And for Trivia games it would be more easier and faster to push a buttons on a controller than to do whatever motion is required.

  6. The application of such a system would seem to be extremely limited. If people already feel silly with the wiimote, imagine taking it away and just flailing around like an idiot. I say leave the interactive systems for the arcade, where gimmicks thrive.

  7. No. Absolutely not. It will be cool, but a large part of video gaming has always been that you can do it and stay in generally one spot. As much as people want to get fit and get in shape and everything, video games will remain a sedentary activity.
