Will the Videogame Industry Ever Crash Again?

All it took was E.T. the first time round - could it happen again, or is the industry too strong?

Deeep... very deep, and it's possible. with the current trend being "more power!, better graphics!" there is a plateau that is going to be reached (maybe where there already?) where you can only tell so much of a difference in the graphics until it just seems trivial. along with the expense it brings to keep trying to reach that level. although technology gets cheaper, the rate of adoption to said technology is faster than the falling price. With the increase in technological "Wow" comes a higher cost in game development. who will cut costs by playing it safe with stable IP's... meaning.. Call of Duty 34 and Madden 102.. and so on. because they will sell up to a point that they reach there limits given the hardware that has a longer and longer cycle. at least thats my hunch *shrug*

  1. Possibly, but I think that it won't happen now. The weak economy seems to actually benefit games to some extent, as they provide the most entertainment for your money.

  2. I don't think it'll ever crash, I mean look how many times the same movie can be made and still make money, all they have to do is change the characters and tweak the plot a little bit and bingo we got another hit.

  3. Not any time soon, but it is possible. I would not say that it will never crash again.

  5. First of all I have to say it was NOT E.T. that caused the video game crash in the 80's. If you were even alive during that time you'd know...the video game crash of the 80s sprung from several factors: severe lack of 3rd party support (as in $$ support), severe lack of quality games, horrible console development, and a lack of care overall for the genre. E.T. was just a symptom of the greater issue.

As far as a video game industry crash now? Most likely not. The game industry has not only learned from the mistakes of the past (though some haven't been truly "learned"), but the industry has already established itself as "entertainment" rather than just "a kid's toy".

In order for a true "crash" to happen, M$, Nintendo, AND Sony will have to fail in the next gen as well as most 3rd party support, which is highly unlikely (despite people saying the contrary). There are too many companies that care about the game industry to let that happen.
