It all depended on the sales of the game. Unfortunately the game didn't sale as well as Microsoft had hoped for an exclusive. The problem was that the game released back to back with Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption so its thunder was completely stolen. After almost a year the game is almost at around 1 million sales.
While the sequel hasn't been officially announced by anybody the writer of Alan Wake has stated that a sequel will be made if they have anything to say about it as they really had it planned as a TV series with each game being a season.
So considering the sales weren't TOO terrible and Microsoft is in need of exclusives I could easily see them funding this sequel as the game was still critically acclaimed.

It is still unofficial, but the developer, Remedy, wants to do a sequel. It would be a Microsoft exclusive. Writer Mikko Rautalahti also wants a sequel saying, ""It's a bigger story than just one game, and we want to make it very weird and scary and wonderful."

In my opinion, this "game" would have been better off as a short film or something like the movies they released for it. Interesting storyline, enough to get me to play through the whole original, but very lacking in actual play. Here's hoping Alan Wake 2 will be released as a DVD instead of a video game.

Most likely, the developers had planned on making a second game. You should check out the DLC that has been coming out for Alan Wake, they are really fun and quite different than the rest of the game (and help lead into a second game).

I read that Remedy was hiring for a new project and there was some indication that it was for a new Alan Wake and I think that it has a strong possibility of getting a sequel because Remedy is a really small team compared to most developers, like 30 people or less it is crazy small, so costs would be really low for Microsoft. I totally agree with the release window for Alan Wake, it is almost a law of physics, don't release anything within a month of a Rockstar game. I really hope that it gets a sequel though.
