Is BioShock 2 "a terrible idea"?

David Houghton, a Games Radar journalist, recently penned an opinion piece outlining why he thinks the whole idea is a bad one.

He raises some valid points, which were concerning me (but not poisoning the well), but at the same time undermines the main thrust by saying that he wanted nothing to do with a sequel regardless. It's like talking vegetarian cookery with a vulture.

My biggest sticking point with the article is the comparison with Resi 5 being over-familiar to Resi 4, which to me misses the actual reasons for Resi 5's failings by a mile. Capcom did indeed copy and paste the bulk of the enemies, a move as obvious as it's lazy, but it's what Resi 5 lost in terms of exploration and adventure, along with the game only being half the size (hello?) which ultimately dooms it to being a forgettable part of the series.

So what's your take on this? Big Sister = big yawn? Levine's distancing a dire warning? What do you think about the article?

In the view of the designers of the game, I don't think its a bad idea at all. Due to the hype and overall greatness of the first one, many people are going to do what Cavalier41 is doing; buy the game and be disappointed. Either way, the audience still bought the game and 2K rakes in the cash. This happens with almost any epic game sequel.

In my view, as a player, I agree with Optimus. This game needs a sequel. Nobody would be happy with just one Bioshock game, even if the second wasn't as good.

  2. BioShock was a great game. Levine might be overhyped but you can't argue that this game could use a sequel when considering other games that have had sequels. Simple view - sequel is ok with me.

it does look very similar, and many game sequels, as opposed to the past, haven't been better then there predecessors. So, I'm going to expect it'll be as good as the original, but not better.

  4. i loved the original, but am a little worried about the sequel. I will buy it, but I think I will be disappointed. With a game that was based on a strong narrative and a fantastic world, i think it is a gamble to return to rapture.
