Dead Space... you get over the scare tactics after awhile though...
Fear 2 for some cheap scares...
Alan Wake looks like it could be pretty freaky... but its yet to be seen as to how much of a horror game it actually is...

"in thid matter"??? idk what that means... Anyway, from what I've heard, Dead Space is a gr8 game that makes people leave the light on when they go to sleep. Also, it's not really THAT scary, but Resistance: Fall of Man is gr8 game also.

hehe.. but really, Dead Space is VERY freaky and fun to play. Silent Hill 2 does a really good job as well. I'd like to mention a "non game" called The Path for the PC.. it's creepy.. but.. nothing really happens.. it's just weird all around. it's on steam, give it a look.

Well, what sort of stuff scares you?
If you think Japanese horror films, ghosts and being in the dark is scary, try the Fatal Frame series (I recommend 1 or 2). You fight ghosts which a camera, which is not only pretty creative, but can actually be pretty tense from time to time when he are waiting to get the right shot.
Haunting Ground can be pretty scary in that you're practically helpless and need to run away and hide a lot, which can be quite nerve wracking. I think some of the music really adds to the fear, especially during the chasing parts.
My personal favorite scary game series is Silent Hill, especially the older ones. Abandoned town, fog, horrific monsters, random alterings of reality, and not to mention an awesome soundtrack. They have pretty good graphics and storylines as well.
Of course this is all assuming you own a PS3. Haven't played a good horror game for any next gen yet.
And playing any horror game on a hard setting always increases it's scary potential, at least for me.
