I've always found that if you play the second or third game in a series and then go back and play the earlier one, it's never as good. Usually the gameplay, weapons and controls are better in the later versions. This can be frustrating when you go back to the earlier game as you are expecting it to be better or the same as the one you just played.

  1. The game is designed to play without having to play ME. But if you want to get the full story, play the first one.

  2. Yes, if you think you want to play Mass Effect, then I would play that one first. I agree with delrio that it's never good to play the most recent version and then go backwards.

  3. You don't absolutely have to, if you don't the game will pick some default choices for you for the events of the first game and fill you in as you go, but you'll be missing out on one of the best features of ME2, importing your characters and watching your ME1 choices affect the events of ME2.
