What do you think of Square essentially doing away with towns in Final Fantasy XIII?

From what I've heard, most of your shopping and healing is done at save points, making towns full of NPCs rare, if not completely gone.

Having most of the healing done at a save point is pretty normal now, but shopping? In XII I really liked going into all the different shops, and it felt so convincing. I'm sure there will still need to be towns to visit and NPCs around, I mean, they are going to need to show off their futuristic world, right? How else can they do that without having big, technologically advanced cities with flying cars and people wearing futuristic clothing? Well, I haven't played the game yet, but I just don't see how they could rule out towns/NPCs completely...

  1. I was under the impression there was just a huge city and then a big open expanse of wilderness. I think it's pretty cool, just because it would be crazy if there was only one city that everyone lived in and the rest of the planet was undeveloped. And I'm glad you can heal/shop at save points, otherwise there would be a lot of pointless backtracking.
