Do Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver have the original Pokemon in them?

For some strange reason, I've had the urge to play a Pokemon game. Maybe for old time's sake. Anyway, I only played the first game back on the Game Boy, and I want to play a game with a lot of the same characters, rather than one with all the newer ones that are kind of lame. So are there a good number of the originals in there? How many are there going to be total? If they aren't in there or there are only a few, is there a better Pokemon on DS for someone who wants to catch the original monsters, but with updated graphics and gameplay?

HeartGold/Soulsilver should be just what you're looking for. Being a remake of Gold and Silver, it will focus more on the first couple generations (about 250, give or take). You will still run into new Pokemon, but they probably won't be as prominent. For Instance, the remakes of Red and Blue (Firered and Leafgreen) on the GBA were like that- you got to see mostly original Pokemon, in the same locations as you were used to. In various new/added locations you would run into some newer Pokemon, but not that many. I'm expecting HeartGold and SoulSilver to be like this, I doubt you will see many 4th gen Pokemon, since you could just trade them from Platinum/Diamond/Pearl. You will mostly see 2nd gen as you are exploring the Johto region (Gold+Silver area), and when you revisit Kanto (red+blue area) during later parts of the game, you should see plenty of familiar 1st gen Pokemon.

  1. Generally speaking, it would appear that most of the currently available Pokemon are in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, with the exception of most of the legendaries and starters that were included in Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl.
