So how's Final Fantasy XIII?
I don't know much about this game, as I'm one that tends to avoid information due to spoilers and such, but I'm not sure if Final Fantasy XIII will be a game I'm going to really like. I guess I'm a bit skeptical because, even though XII was a lot of fun, I didn't get very drawn into the characters OR story of it, and those two things are important to me in FF games. Looking at XIII's characters, I don't feel interested in any of them, Lightning especially. I'm hoping that this game will surprise me, but the last FF game I really liked was IX, and my personal favorite is VII (don't care how stereotypical that sounds, for me it had great characters, a memorable story and the lore interests me more than the other titles). So perhaps I could get an opinion from someone who also likes the Playstation era of FF (VII-IX), and enjoys games with solid story and deep characters. Is Final Fantasy XIII a great game like it's hyped up to be? Not that I blame it for being hyped up, of course, seeing that it is an FF game..

Checked out the first hour or so last night. In that time, I watched a few cutscenes and fought a few battles, but I've barely scratched the surface. Take these impressions with a grain of salt.
I will say that it's a lot more immediately engaging than I expected it to be, even though it still feels very much like a FF game. Graphically impressive, and the combat system seems interesting, though I don't have many options available yet. (Haven't even leveled anyone up yet.)
Not much of the story has been revealed, but it seems fairly typical to other FF games. Still not sure if it'll end up being as emotionally engaging as VII, for example.
For what it's worth, I was also not a huge fan of XII, for the reasons you mentioned.
I'm also looking forward to playing more, which is usually a good sign. :)

I'm having a lot of fun so far. I just got the ability to gain crystogen (this game's form of experience) and switch paradigms in battle (which are basically like changing jobs, but you change all your characters jobs at once as part of a specific strategy). You don't really get much of the customization options in the game until after the second chapter, which is about 2.5 hrs into the game total. It's a bit slow up until there, but the payoff seems to be a fresh and interesting take on classic FF gameplay. As far as the story goes, it's definitely a FF story, but it's definitely interesting enough to hold my interest. The characters overall haven't really grabbed me yet, but they're already more interesting to me than the characters from XII, who I thought were pretty boring. There's already a lot of conflict brewing between Lightning and Snow, which will be interesting to see how it plays out, because I can't remember a Final Fantasy where two main characters have actually shown this much conflict.
