Why gamers are not taken seriously when they are talking games and its industry infront of non-gamers
Best Answer
Its because video games are still seen as "toys" by most of the non-gaming public, or a frivolous activity that doesn't have any value, as opposed to other entertainment mediums, such as a book, which people view as art and will critique as such. Until a game comes out that transcends the medium and forces people to look at games with a critical eye, its never going to be taken seriously

It's a good deal like the situation that occurred with music, especially in the 50's onwards. A good deal of culture has conformed to "modern music" in all its shapes and sizes, but it may take more time for video games to be as widely accepted as an entertainment medium. For the time being, just be comfortable in the fact that that you're not just a part of the faceless horde.

It's not a mainstream culture....yet.
Even as gaming has become the highest grossing entertainment past time it's not really a mainstream culture. If you came upon a regular "Joe" and someone in the field of Theoretical astronomy.. the average Joe may be impressed, but more in that "oh wow, thats quaint" kind of way. I'm totally not saying Theoretical astronomy and video games are related, just saying that while Theoretical astronomy is amazing and can be mind boggling, most people just see it as "Huh... ok" which is the reaction alot of people still have toward competitve gamers or people who truly love gaming and even the crazy sub-gaming stuff like Game history, or Gaming behavior theory and such.
in short... different cultures.
