What do you suggest would be a first step to game development?
After much thought, I feel as if game development is the career path I want to take. However, I'm still in high school and have no experience with coding. What would you suggest is a first step to getting into development?

I'm not a professional game developer but I do write software for a living. I got into game development and software in general by learning C/C++ around the time Quake came out in 1996 and dabbling in game modding.
If I were learning now? I'd recommend people go take a look at the XNA Framework. There are some excellent guides online and you can cross compile your tests / experiments for the PC and Xbox360 from the same (roughly) codebase.
More importantly as far as any technical industry goes, learn to LOVE it. There's a pretty good 80/20 rule of average/excellent professionals, and the best people I jokingly refer to as "lifers" - the guys and girls who live and breathe technology as a passion and not just a career.
Take an interest, read around the topic. There's a lot you can learn from traditional software development that'll go along way in game development.
If you want to stay away from dev, perhaps look at art or story.

That is a difficult question to answer for someone who does not have any coding experience. You really need a good handle on math concepts like geometry and physics in addition to programming concepts like data structures and algorithms to write good games.
I'd say start small and work your way up to developing games. Start by learning some C# (download MS Visual Express) and see how you like it. Then download the XNA Studio and start to play around. If you want to make a career out of it, then I highly suggest you go to college and get a degree in it.
As someone who is an avid game and a professional C# developer, there is a huge difference in the enjoyment levels between playing games all day long and sitting front of a computer banging out code to make a game. Please make sure you want to take a hobby and turn it into a job.
And like any program you write, you need to lay out a good foundation

Story, then concept art. Gotta have the direction and then the vision.

Play lots of games watch lots of movies read books sketch a little (or a lot) keep your eyes open :) try your hands on scripting mods and moding in general. you will find many people that will help you start there. Every time you play a game write down the 3 things you like most and 3 things you didn't like. Be persistent, polite and have fun!!! Don't forget to wear sunscreen :)
All the Best!!!

Depends on what you are good at because there are a number of different disciplines(i.e. designers, artists, programmers, produces, QA). You'll need to figure that out before you get started.
The way I got started(I'm a programmer), was through making a game that was picked as a top game in the IGF student competition. Doing that gets you recognized really fast. At the time I did that, I was already mostly done with a computer science degree and had made a number of small 2D and 3D games. Programming is very math and logic oriented, so you'll need to be good(and actually somewhat enjoy) that stuff before you go down that path. These days I use mainly C++ for development on the big consoles if you're curious about what language to learn.
One thing to know though is that playing video games is one thing, but making them is not nearly as sexy. Lots of late nights, long hours, and mediocre compensation.
