How much Ram is a good amount for a computer these days?

My computer just broke and i bought a new computer with more Ram. My old computer actually died because the hard drive failed completely, but it also had 512MB of Ram. Which i heard was really bad. The new computer will have 2GB of Ram, which is deffidently better, but is that a good amount of Ram for these days? Is it atleast good enough to surf the web?

Nothing less than 4GB for a new computer.

I had 2 GB on Windows 7 64bit and had hickups when using Firefox, especially when watching HD video streams. After upgrading to 4, no problems.

If you're using XP or 32bit Windows 7 2GB might be enough though, I don't know.
