Technical help for Silent Hill 2 running on Windows XP?
I've owned the Playstation versions of SH0-SH5 for a while now and as a collector I decided to get the PC versions of SH2-SH5. Upon installing and trying to play SH2 is where I encountered trouble.
For some reason the sound may just suddenly stop. Background music may stutter until a scene change. James's footsteps might suddenly stop playing sounds. I have installed some sound patch but this issue still persists.
A second issue I faced about as soon as I got to the part in the apartments where you use the canned juice item. Now the in-game cutscenes will not play all the way through. They will start but then freeze, and at that point I must skip them.
A third and the worst problem is sometimes when I exit the game the screen just remains black. My entire computer screen and there is no alt-tabbing/etc to be done. At that point I wait a bit then just restart...
I thought because I have Windows XP 32 bit that there wouldn't be many problems but I was wrong.
ANY help is appreciated!

0. Ensure your game is fully patched.
1. Upgrade Graphics Drivers
2. Upgrade Motherboard Chipset drivers (more important than you might think)
4. Upgrade Sound Drivers (also more important than you might think)
5. If you're runinng and Athlon X2, install CPU drivers to fix the real time clock bug (produces skips in games that bypass the Windows API for time).
6. Set the game to run on a single processor core if you have a multicore machine (right click the executable and "Set Affinity")
7. Try compatability mode (right click -> properties the exe)

This sounds mainly like a performance issue, have you tried opening your task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and ending all unneccessary background programs? Try doing this before you play and see if it makes a difference. You can tell if you made a difference by checking the performance tab in your task manager both before and after ending the programs. Did your CPU usage go down? Is more RAM available? If you answer yes to both of these questions then yes it is probably just a performance issue. Another thing would be to go into the options menu of the game and decrease some of the video settings, it may look crappy but you should get away from some of these problems.
