Is the trend of MMOs going free to play a sign of difficulty competing with WoW?

Recently, Lord of the Rings Online and Everquest II have joined the ranks of Dungeons and Dragons Online and Anarchy Online in the list of MMOs that were once subscription-based, but are now microtransaction-supported. Do you think this trend is caused specifically by difficulty competing with WoW? Do you think this trend will continue? How long until games like Star Trek Online, Champions Online, FFXI, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, City of Heroes, Eve Online, etc. go free to play, if ever?

I think their philosophy is: Less is more. Less to pay is more people willing to pay and they would get more money. (Thoughts?)
You still have to pay a sum of money to get a copy of the game and then a monthly fee, right? I don't play MMOs so this isn't really my field.

But, ofcourse they need money and the only thing that is going to be affected is the game, less support, less expansions, less content, etc.
