You need to open the enemy's gates. You need to do it once at the beginning, so Hakim can escape. And later when you're storming the castle, after you breach the first wall and when you get to the second wall, there's a section that actually faces the town..which means you can climb it and walk down to the other side. Climb it, walk to the other side, and hold the nearest gate open for your troops.

To open a gate: Activate a soldier group and move your cursor over the wall gate...the icon should change to an arrow, or something like that. Click on the gate and your soldiers will open it.
