Do you mean sub-weapons like axes and knives? Those you have to activate by holding up on the d-pad and pressing attack at the same time. Assuming the controls are like Symphony of the Night, since I haven't played much of the new one yet.

Or if you're trying to use a healing potion or something like that, in SOTN you needed to equip it to a hand like you would for a sword, then press the button for that hand.
