Do iPhone ports of current gen games do the game any justice?

I've noticed a lot of iPhone "ports" of games that are usually on current gen gaming systems. Street Fighter, Assassin's Creed, and Tomb Raider have iPhone counterparts, but do you think it's worth the time and effort for studios to do this? Does porting a particular game on the iPhone help or hinder a franchise?

I think most people realize that the handheld version of a game will always be worse than the real deal. I have Fifa World Cup on my iTouch; while the graphics don't look that great and you are missing some of the control features the game is still quite fun to play while you are on the go.
I have also played the Assassin's Creed ports and would have to say that they are completely different (side-scrolling/semi 3D)...not to say they aren't fun, they just are not the same game.
So to sum it up..I would say that they do the franchise justice and make you want to play the real game more.

  1. I've heard from a number of people that the iPhone versions of Madden are pretty terrible. I kind of see mobile ports of AAA games as more of a novelty anyways.

  2. Really, making the port can only help bring in more money. Though I haven't had much experience with it. I hear SF IV is pretty good on iPhone, and I have the iPhone version of Resident Evil 4 and it plays pretty well.

  3. It's a nice budget version of that game. I've always though of portable games as knock off-like. I don't really like portable games because of that. It always felt like i was going backwards, instead of forwards. And to be honest, i don't want to play games outside of my house. When i go outside, i want to hang out with friends and party.

That said, i think these ports are good for some people, but not the hardcore gamers. I do think it helps the franchise, eventhough i don't play them though.
