Why does PS3 have many little updates while Xbox 360 has one big update?

PS3 always has so many updates and Xbox has 1 to 2 a year. I can't even count how many PS3 has had. Why is this?

I think it comes down to preference for each of the companies. When Sony wants to add/delete things here and there, they just do it (or so it seems). Microsoft on the other hand seems to take their time making sure they are putting out a worthwhile update, which is why you get a few huge updates per year. I'm not sure if this is true, but that is my guess.

I feel like Sony has to put out a bunch of updates because they need to fix little bugs here and there that were introduce as a result of previous small updates...I have noticed that with Microsoft you have to download little updates a few days after the big ones (probably to correct little bugs).

Sony is also more ambitious with it plans for the PS3 than Microsoft is with the Xbox 360 (i.e. 3D, stopping jailbreakers, etc.), so that may account for some of the recent updates.

  1. recently,(as of this past year.) it's mostly just to plug holes that hackers are finding. GeoHotz (first to unlock the iPhone.) found an exploit in the Ps3 late last year, and Sony released a few patches to plug it. and now the PSFreedom.

I actually really dislike Sony's method. every week I am locked out of PSN or some game, or movie until some crap downloads and installs. some games require a really large download just to play. and it takes forever. it's kindof ridiculous.
