Is A.I. lacking in videogames?

With the focus so firmly on HD graphics, is Artificial Intelligence in videogames lagging behind?

Not... really? I think that there comes a point where gamers learn the A.I. and figure out how to 'play the system', but that's more a limitation of the system - it's very hard to program a learning system on a console, and while it can be done on a PC, it usually isn't due to hardware limitations. I don't think A.I. is any dumber, and in fact we've seen some definite improvements over time, but a serious improvement in A.I. has yet to be seen.

  1. It depends what game. On Resident Evil 5 i think Shiva can be really dumb, i just give her a sniper without ammo and watch her run around like an idiot. On Call of Duty i think the computer can be pretty stupid sometimes and just stand there in the open. Prouble the only game i know of that has perfect AI is Guitar Hero when somebody leaves an online game. But that prouble doesnt really count. Eventhough all that stuff, Graphics, Multiplayer, and overall gameplay is much much more important that AI.

  2. Killzone 2's AI is the best I have seen, strategy wise, balance wise. I think some games are garbage when they make the AI in a shooter have a perfect shot. Unreal Tournament 3 is bogus on normal difficulty, the AI can shoot across the map with insane accuracy where in any normal AI situation you would be out of their immediate range, it lacks a AI point of view.

  3. Personally, I think alot of developers are skimping on the A.I. programming to bring in a deeper multiplayer and online experience. and while this can be seen as "lazy" which, I guess in some cases it really is lazy. it's not a bad idea, because no matter how hard you try to create something to act human.... an actual human is going to do the trick.

  4. Without a doubt my friend! It seems to me that nobody has placed their focus on AI since Halo's beginning. Even amazing titles like Half Life has simpleton AI. The last game I played that had good AI was FEAR 2, and even then it was the same behavior as FEAR 1 (no real improvement). I hope it changes soon. But for the meantime it isnt horrible. It's just not revolutionary like Halo 1's.

  5. Most Games yeah, but some games actually have a decent A.I.. I like the A.I. in Killzone 2, They respond to your inactivity and your movement differently every time you play.
