Sequels...DO you think they live to the first game?
I'm sure most of us already plaed sequels of games. My question is, can sequels, in your opinion, live up to the legend of the first game? Or some of them just fail ?

It's all very dependent upon the source material. Left 4 Dead didn't have much of a story really, so a sequel to that could possibly be better than the first. Bioshock though, that had an awesome story (I thought.) so I'm cautious about that sequel.
It also depends which platform it's coming from and which one it's going to, if it's an older genre that doesn't "work" for today's audience, would moving it to a more "consumer friendly" genre hurt it overall.
For the most part.. I think they do live up.. ask me again in 2 years and you may get a different answer though.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no, sometimes they can even surpass them though. Many non-story based games for example have sequels that are real improvements and clearly not only live up to, but surpass their predecessors.

I think it depends on the game itself. I mean, you can take the Mario, Zelda, and Final Fantasy series of course and make as many sequels as possible, and most if not all of them will be huge hits. I do believe Video Game sequels are a lot more enticing than movie sequels.

Some of them do fail, but some of them turn out to be more amazing than the first game ever could be. The shining example in my mind is Gears of War 2. The representative of that game claimed it would be "Bigger, better, more badass." It certainly did do just that.

Unlike many movie sequels, I'm usually pretty happy with game sequels. Many games I play are franchises/series, and therefore have for than one sequel. Most of these series have strong roots, and a solid story concept that can adapt over time. Take Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil, for example. Both of these series have changed a lot, especially in the 4th installment. But people still love them. How many movies have 4+ sequels that are also VERY successful?

Unless handled by idiots, sequels tend to be better because the developer can take everything which worked and replace the bits which didn't.
