What kind of battle system do you feel is best suited to a JRPG?

Final Fantasy has traditionally used a turn-based system, Star Ocean has real-time battles, and there are a good number turning to strategic battles. Which do you feel best represents the feel and principles of a standard JRPG? Which is your favorite?

I grew up on turn based battles, yet I love the star ocean system... But something about turn based always brings me back to it. When I picked up the newer Persona games, I was stoked that it was turn based. It had been a while since I'd played an RPG with that fighting system. Granted it can be slow paced (another plus of Persona, the turbo mode! :D)... real time is fun because you are more in the action as it's happening, can dodge attacks and you understand why you miss when you attack in most cases... but it's more of an action RPG, not classic. When I think RPG, I think turn based because that is what the genre is based upon. Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior/Quest... the beginning of the genre used it, it's what I grew up on, and it's what I love.

  1. It's hard to say because I enjoy both real-time and turn-based.
Although, I'm not always in the mood to play a turn-based game. I love how they can be very strategic, but at the same time they are a bit on the slow side. And I don't like always getting into random battles..
On the other hand, while real-time can be much more fast paced and exciting, it sometimes doesn't feel like it suits the style of many RPGs. Especially if you consider applying that type of system to the classics.
I usually like real-time if they are free, and have a hack-n-slash feel to them (think Kingdom Hearts).
So I guess.... it's a tie. Depends on the franchise, they way the battle system works as a whole, etc. But I do admit, Square(-Enix) seems to have a knack for pulling off a good battle system whether it be either Real-Time or Turn-based.

  2. Why does a JRPG have to have a battle system at all? Why can't it just be a bunch of dainty lads traipsing about in fetish gear collecting treasure?

  3. I would rather a turn-based system for JRPG's, more strategy is involved in these types of games as one wrong move can generally not be fixed if the player does not know what they are doing.

Real-time games are good but seem to feel abit messy and its extremely hard to get right.

  4. Well, the thing is, different permutations of both systems are always coming up all the time. Not all of them are great, but they're always interesting, and thus makes both of them worth exploration.

  5. I really like FFXII's system I know a lot of people didn't but I found it to be a lot of fun.

  6. Turn based is fine, though having the option to hit buttons at the right time to cause extra damage (Paper Mario) is the best IMO. The only problem with turn-based is the insistence on filling them with pre-battle prattle or the camera sliding over the enemies instead of just letting you get on with it, boring!
