Is Half-Life 2 the best game of all time?

Because SOMEBODY certainly thinks so -- it got the top spot in this list of the 500 best games of all time. (For context, other games in the top 5 are: #2 - Super Mario Bros. 3; #3 - Link to the Past; #4 - Portal; #5 Super Mario World.)

I like how your profile points back to thephoenix.com and coincidentally you're advertising for the same site.

But to answer your question, no. I think a Tetris or a Super Mario Bros needs to be up there. Half Life 2 only improved on an existing genre...to be perfectly honest, Half Life 1 should be higher than HL2 for its explosion in community modding. Knowing that, DOOM and Quake should be higher on the list than that.

  1. It's a great game, and is definitely toward the top of my list. It does great things with story and immersion, especially since it almost never breaks you out of character. Though I'd have other games that might be close competitors for my personal best of all time, including Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy III (US), Chrono Trigger, Bioshock, and World of Warcraft.

  3. I heard from lots of people that it was a great game. Is the best? Eventhough i haven't played it, i'm going to respectively say it's not the best.

    My favorite game of all time is Halo: Combat Evolved. I love shooters and Halo started my obsession to the genre.

  5. I agree with SPope on this one, Halo: Combat Evolved should be number one...it brought the FPS genre to the next generation of consoles (there weren't many good shooters for PS2 or Xbox, IMO).

    I also don't get why there are two Super Mario games in the top five...I understand one, but two is overkill.
