Why is Pokemon still so popular?

I see a lot of questions on here about Pokemon. What makes it good?

Besides what the link has to say, I believe, as someone who still plays from time to time, that Pokemon is just a piddle game. A game that if you have it and have nothing else to do, you play it to pass the time. Plus if you grew up with the series it makes you feel nostalgic really.
