What is the NYT Crossword?

The New York Times Crossword is the most famous crossword in the world. Published daily since 1942, it runs as a 15x15 grid Monday to Saturday and a 21x21 grid on Sunday, with difficulty rising through the week: Monday is the gentlest, Saturday is the hardest, and Sunday is large but mid-week in difficulty.

The puzzle was edited by Will Shortz from 1993 until 2024 and is now overseen by Joel Fagliano, with constructors from around the world contributing grids. Monday to Thursday puzzles have a theme; Friday and Saturday are themeless.

How to play the NYT Crossword

Fill the grid so that every Across and Down answer matches its clue. Numbered squares mark where answers begin. Theme answers, usually the longest entries, share a twist that the puzzle's title or a revealer clue explains. Thursday puzzles are known for rebus squares and other tricks that bend the normal rules.

When does the new NYT Crossword come out?

The next day's puzzle is released at 10:00 pm Eastern Time (6:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays). We publish hints and answers as soon as the puzzle is available and keep every previous day in the archive above.

NYT Crossword strategy and tips

  1. 1Start with Monday-level cluesEven on a Saturday, a handful of clues are straightforward. Find them and build outward from the crossings.
  2. 2Hunt for the revealerA clue that references other entries or ends in "?" often explains the theme. Solving it first unlocks the long answers.
  3. 3Respect the day of the weekThursday means tricks like rebus squares; Friday and Saturday mean long, clever fill with misleading clues.
  4. 4Use the Wordplay columnThe NYT's daily column explains every theme and the hardest clues once you are done, and is the best way to learn constructor conventions.
  5. 5Check crossings before committingAn answer that fits the clue but breaks a crossing is wrong. Let the perpendicular entries confirm it.
